ST GEORGE RURAL CEMETERY
- How do you want to be remembered?
About us
The St George Rural Cemetery was founded in 1876. At the St George Rural Cemetery, you decide how to tell your life story. Whether sculpted in marble or carved in granite, cast in bronze or reflected in a garden, there are countless ways to be remembered. For more than 135 years, this not-for-profit, non-denominational cemetery has served as the final resting place for more than 4000 citizens .
The town was founded by Peter Clinch, a United Loyalist who emigrated from the United States in 1784. Many monuments featuring beautiful St George Granite are located in our cemetery. In 1872 , the Bay of Fundy Red Granite Company employed 65 men in the finishing factory and an additional 15 in the quarries, located about five miles north of St. George. The Company's dam was directly under the bridge which has since been rebuilt. The rushing water fell through a flume and turned a water wheel at the base. At that time the power was transferred, by means of a cogwheel, to the main shaft in the mill, situated behind the hill. Power was taken off the long shaft at various points in the mill for operating lathes, column-cutters, and polishing machines
A plot in the center of the St George Municipal Cemetery, marked by a set of flags, contains Commonwealth War Graves. 1 RCAF (Canada), 4 RAFVR (Britain), 1 RAAF (Australian) and 3 RNZAF (New Zealand). 5 other Canadain soldiers were laid to rest on private lots in the cemetery. The cost of maintenance of these graves is borne by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the flags are the responsibility of the St George Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
